In fact, the credits are better than the original's as they are polite enough to take you back to the main menu at the end. The story is almost entirely separated from the events of the original, which is hard to believe, but Gearbox did take some notes and its best moments are at least equal in quality to some of Half-Life's. His moveset and weapons are more limited and the reduced scale of the story can be a little comical, but if not the power fantasy, Blue Shift manages to preserve the main strengths of the original: fun, suspenseful gameplay that encourages problem solving. You play as one of the security guards Gordon encounters in the original Half-Life game. Give it a shot!ħ0% PCBlue Shift is a solid short companion story to Half-Life. I similarly think any fan will have fun with this as well! So, even though it’s not as good as Half Life or Opposing Force, it’s still a really fun time on its own. I love Half Life and any chance to explore more of Black Mesa is a welcomed one. All said and done though, I did enjoy my time. This is even more notable since this expansion is considerably shorter than those two. Another complaint I have is that a lot of the puzzles felt way more convoluted than the other installments, I frequently found myself having to use a guide to solve puzzles which I hardly had to do in the others. There also is not a final boss either unlike the other installments of the Half Life ecosystem. You do not get to see The Race X as you encountered in HL:OF for one, which does feel like a missed opportunity. Additionally, you get to see some recreational areas like a cafe and an arcade which I really appreciated since it made Black Mesa feel lived and worked in! While the game does give a lot more nice context and external information on the world you play in, there isn’t very much else new it brings. From this, you get a lot of information on Black Mesa, such as the original facilities positioned underneath the major areas seen in the base game. Wit’s not as mechanic based as using your military buddies in HL:OF it’s largely story driven, from talking to your coworkers at the start of the game to talking with scientists and saving them from the HECU. You also receive a lot more interaction with NPCs in this expansion. Yet, a nice touch is that you still see the recharge stations throughout the game, reminding you that on most days people like Freeman would be carrying out their business with hazardous anomalies. This means that you have no access to the HEV suit the entire game. Due to your rank in the facility, you are able to traverse quite a lot of Black Mesa on your own, however, you’re not as high up as Gordon Freeman. Gameplay is very similar to HL and HL:OF, but there are some major differences. From this point, you have to go through the song and dance of using your wits to survive with the resources you find along the way in hopes of escaping the turmoil. You have that iconic scene of struggling to get inside, get suited up for guard duty, and the Resonance Cascade happens soon after. Blue Shift follows Barney Calhoun, a security guard at Black Mesa, specifically he is the guard you see struggling to get inside the facility while on the tram in the first game. While I certainly agree that it’s not as good or groundbreaking as it (nor the base game either), it is still a very fun and worthwhile expansion! I don’t believe it deserves the bad reputation it has. 80% PCThis expansion of the critically acclaimed Half-Life gets a lot of flack for not being as good as the other expansion, Opposing Force.
